Shaping the Future of Health: Health Systems Reform Regional Webinar

How can Latin America reach Universal Health Coverage? See highlights from our webinar

Last month, experts from Mexico and Colombia gathered for an insightful webinar to discuss the findings of the latest special issue of the Health Systems & Reform journal. Hosted by the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública and El Colegio de México, the session explored how goal-oriented reforms are essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage in Latin America and beyond.

The discussion featured a powerful lineup of speakers who shared critical lessons for today’s healthcare landscape. Laura Flamand opened the conversation by highlighting that successful reforms must go beyond administrative changes to focus on solving specific, diagnosed problems within the population. Following this, Hélène Barroy (WHO) explained that public funding alone isn’t enough; we need flexible financial management systems that allow resources to actually reach the most critical health services.

Turning to the political side of the issue, Diana Pinto analyzed why some administrations in Mexico and Colombia have moved to dismantle established health systems even when they showed clear progress in equity. Finally, Fernando Ruiz shared a vital warning about how political polarization can jeopardize the long-term stability and sustainability of health improvements across the region.

If you are interested in the political and economic forces shaping our health systems, this conversation is a must-watch. Watch the full event and dive deeper into regional perspectives below.
