Summary

This article highlights a severe financial consequence of Mexico’s failing health system: a dramatic rise in excessive (catastrophic and impoverishing) health expenditures. While income-based poverty fell, the number of people lacking access to health services grew by 24 million (2018-2024), forcing them into the private sector. This resulted in a record 15.9 million people facing excessive health costs in 2024. The authors link this to the dismantling of Seguro Popular, chronic medicine shortages, and the declining quality of public institutions, including social security, which no longer provide adequate financial protection.
